Datacatch Librarian Useful Information

Recent Microsoft Windows security update causes warning messages to appear in Datacatch Librarian

Note that this issue was resolved in Datacatch Librarian release 1.0.1.9.

If you are still seeing this error in your version of Datacatch Librarian, please follow these steps:

1. Download the latest release, and save the file to your computer's desktop:

  • Datacatch Librarian Standard
  • Datacatch Librarian Professional

2. Double-click the Datacatch Librarian installation icon from your desktop, and then follow the instructions to re-install:

  • If you were previously running a 30-day trial, the trial will continue to run until the end of the 30-day period.
  • If you were previously running a licensed version of the software, your license key is retained and does not need to be re-entered.

3. If you previously removed and then hid the security update KB921398 to stop this message from appearing, we strongly recommend that you reinstall the update now:

a. From the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel.
b. Select Add or Remove Programs. You'll see the message (shown below) warning that you've hidden important updates.
c. Select to Restore them now, and then follow the instructions to reinstall the Windows update.

Important- You've hidden important updates.
You've asked us not to show youone or more high-priority updates but your computer might be at risk until they are uninstalled. Restore them now.

Background
Microsoft issued a non-critical security update for Windows XP (KB921398) on August 8, 2006. This caused the following warning message to appear in a number of Windows-based programs including Datacatch Librarian:

This message appeared when Datacatch Librarian items were selected in the View pane of Windows Explorer in the following situations:

  • double-click an item to browse location, media, and folder contents
  • right-click an item to view its menu options or properties

You could then select Yes to continue browsing using Datacatch Librarian. If you clicked No, which is the default value, your selected operation was cancelled.

For computers set to suppress warning messages, the default action of No was selected without this message being displayed. This caused Datacatch Librarian to take no action when you double-clicked or right-clicked locations and media within the View pane.

You can find out more about the security update on the Microsoft web site.
