Datacatch Librarian Customer Stories
Software company solves archive headache
"I needed a more efficient way to manage and audit client archives," says Russell Keenan, CEO of IPS, an independent software services and development company in Melbourne, Australia. Established in 1990, IPS specializes in developing enterprise solutions for medium to large companies.
In addition to regularly scheduled back-ups, IPS also creates codebase and database archives at the completion of each client job. These archives are stored on DVD to help them re-create the development environment quickly when their clients request future development and enhancements.
"The more our business grows, the bigger our client archive library becomes and the harder it is to manage," says Russell.
"It could take over an hour to locate all of the discs for a particular job. Even worse were the times we couldn't find all of the discs we needed and had to resort to back-ups to re-create a development environment."
"Not only was this frustrating, it was also costing us money. As a small business we can't afford to waste time on unproductive effort."
"Every hour we spend searching for files is an hour we're not getting paid," he says.
Datacatch Librarian to the rescue!
Fortunately these problems are behind them IPS have installed Datacatch Librarian, a powerful software solution for cataloging, managing and locating files stored on removable media, including removable hard drives, USB keys, and optical discs such as CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Running in the background it automatically catches details from removable media and stores the details in its database.
"Whenever we create a new DVD, Datacatch Librarian asks whether we want to add the details to its database. It couldn't be easier," says Russell.
"Adding our existing discs was just as easy. Simply insert each disc into the computer's DVD drive and Datacatch Librarian automatically captures its details."
"Finding files in the database is also quick and painless. We can search for an entire client job, an individual disc, or even an individual file. In terms of time saved searching for and retrieving discs, Datacatch Librarian paid for itself the first time we used it."
"Datacatch Librarian has become an integral part of the IPS development team," says Russell.
"I can't imagine life without it!"
