Datacatch Librarian Customer Stories
Photographer clicks with archive management solution
"I would breakout in a cold sweat whenever I received an urgent request for an image that was part of an archived job. I was never sure exactly how long the search would take or how many of my CDs, DVDs and removable hard drives I would need to search," says Terry Lyon, owner and manager of Terry Lyon Photography in Perth, Australia.
Like any busy photographic studio, Terry's archive system wasn't perfect. It consisted of hundreds of CDs and DVDs, together with a growing number of removable hard drives, all of which contained copies of raw and delivered client images together with stock art.
These were stores in various media storage cabinets with a log that listed the dates and client jobs stored on each piece of media.
"I always have a rough idea of where I should start looking but I'd run into problems when jobs were incorrectly recorded on the log or when discs were missing or filed incorrectly," he says.
"There were times when I needed to search multiple hard drives and discs, one by one, before I could find the image I needed."
"When I started receiving a growing number of requests for archived images, I knew the time had come to find a more efficient system!"
When Terry received a phone call from his brother Lindsay, CEO of Datacatch, asking whether he'd be willing to evaluate a new product designed to solve his archive problem, he jumped at the opportunity.
Handing the job over to a Datacatch Librarian
"Datacatch Librarian has significantly improved my work flow and completely turned around the way I do business. It now takes a minute or so to search for the job or image that a client requests and retrieve it from the disc or drive on which it is stored. One minute more and it's on its way across the Internet," says Terry.
'Not only am I saving time, I'm also providing my customers with better service."
"An added benefit is that I'm rediscovering images I'd forgotten existed. I've added many of these rediscovered images to my stock art collection and have already sold quite a few."
Datacatch Librarian is a powerful software solution for cataloging, managing and locating files stored on removable media, including removable hard drives, USB keys, and optical discs such as CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray and HD-DVDs. Running in the background is automatically 'catches" details from removable media and stores the details in its database.
"To get my archive image details into Datacatch Librarian all I needed to do was insert the disc or connect the removable hard drive to my computer."
"Datacatch Librarian automatically captures information including file and folder names and thumbnail images. I can even add my own comments," Says Terry.
"The real benefit is when I need to find an image. I can browse image thumbnails through Windows Explorer or search for a specific client or image name. Datacatch Librarian tells me where the image is, the piece of media that contains the image, and where that media is located, right down to the slot number within my CD storage cabinet!"
"I'm happier now that I'm able to spend my time and effort doing jobs that help to pay the bills. I love having a librarian working for me!"
